Under 21 Women's Tournament Wrap Up

Game Four - Northern Districts vs Wellington.  Wellington Won by 45 runs.

The fourth 50 over game against Wellington was a rain interrupted game and that didn't help the ND U21 women's team cause.  Halliday lost the toss for the 4th successive game and Wellington had no hesitation in batting first.  Wellington went on to post a competitive 239/6, after a superb innings from Mason-Jones who finished with 94, as well as a useful contribution from A Kerr who scored 71.  Anderson and Saunders picked up 2 wickets apiece.  A reduced target of 155 in 21 overs was always going to be a challenge and when wickets fell at regularly intervals ND would eventually fall 45 runs short of victory.  A loss to finish the 50 over part of the competition but with 3 20 over games to go ND were certainly not giving up on winning the title.

Game One, T20 - Northern Districts vs Central Districts.  Central Districts Won by 1 run.

First up in the 20 over format was Central.  A strong, powerful line up. It was no shock when Halliday lost the toss again and Central opted to bat first.  Scoring 150/6 the ND girls knew it was within reach but it would take a team effort to get over the line.  Anderson and Halliday had an outstanding partnership of 111 to get ND to within touching distance.  It came down to the last ball in the last over, and unfortunately for ND they couldn't scramble a single to tie the game, giving Central the win by 1 run.

Game Two, T20 - Northern Districts vs Otago.  Northern Districts Won by 4 Wickets.

The ND girls did exceptionally well in the afternoon game to pick themselves up after the mornings narrow loss to beat Otago by 4 wickets. Perry and Anderson were exceptional in the bowling department both bowling 4 overs cheaply and picking up 2 wickets each.  The batting did have a wobble as the team chased 106 for victory but a crucial partnership between Nensi Patel and Halliday all but sealed the win for the ND girls, Patel finishing unbeaten on 16.

Game Three, T20 - Northern Districts vs Auckland. Northern Districts won by 21 runs.

The final game against Auckland was one that ND were determined to win and finish the tournament on a high.  With Auckland winning all their 20 overs to date it meant that they had one the tournament before going into the last game.  The team were desperate for Halliday to win at least one toss, but that wasn't to be.  Not to worry though as ND posted a competitive 146/2, Anderson chipping in with 16, Lobb with 35, and of course Halliday scoring an unbeaten 67 not out!  The bowling and fielding efforts were outstanding, Hollis, Patel and Saunders all claimed 2 wickets and crucial catches were held by McHugh, Robinson & Hayes.  The winning margin of 21 runs was a super way to end a gruelling week's work!

Congratulations to Brooke Halliday, Kate Anderson and Briana Perry who were all named in the team of the tournament and congratulations to Auckland for winning the tournament.

On behalf of Northern Districts thank you to all the parents who travelled to support the team, Felicity Leydon-Davis for her exceptional organisational skills in the manager role and a huge thank you to all 13 players who worked incredibly hard over the week, you can sit back and enjoy Christmas now!
